Sicily accounts for 90% of the Italian lemon, while Siracusa lemon today comprises 34% of the entire domestic production. The cultivar ‘femminello siracusano’ is characterised by high juice content, abundance of oil glands in the skin (which is non-treated in post-harvesting and therefore edible), and rare quality of essential oils.
The name ‘femminello’, from ‘feminine’, straightly recalls the fertility of the plant, which flowers all year round in three distinct harvests: the ‘Primofiore’, or ‘Winter Lemon’, is harvested from October and April; the ‘Bianchetto’ or ‘Spring Lemon’ runs from April to June; the ‘Verdello’ or ‘Summer Lemon’ is harvested from June to September.
Pasam grows lemons both in conventional and organic farming. The former are subordinate to the Policy Document of Integrated Production developed and enforced by the Sicilian Region. Our associates resort to the integrated pest control – where insects’ role in restoring the natural balance is pivotal
To ensure consumers with a fresh, safe, pollute-free product, as well as to the mating disruption method, where the breeding of pheromones inhibits pest pollination.
